Washington Poets Association Announces

9th Annual Bart Baxter Contest for Poetry in Performance

April 3, 2006, 7:15 PM at Richard Hugo House, Seattle, Washington.

The Washington Poets Association announces the 9th Annual Bart Baxter Contest for Poetry in Performance will be held on Monday, April 3rd, 2006, at Richard Hugo House in Seattle.

Eight finalists will compete for $500 in cash awards in 3 rounds. The performance competition will be MC'ed by poet and radio host; Paul Nelson. Poets are given three minutes to perform their poems in seeded one-on-one poetry bouts and are judged up or down following each reading . Judging considers both the poem and the public performance of the poetry. Note: there are significant differences between Poetry Slams and this contest. All styles of poetry and performance are encouraged to enter.

The 9th annual competition is set for Monday, April 3, 2006, at 7:15 p.m. at Richard Hugo House, 1634 Eleventh Ave., Seattle. Admission is free, donations suggested. The Bart Baxter Contest is open to all poets 16 and older. Deadline for entering is March 15, 2006. Details on how to enter the competition can be downloaded at Washington Poets Association.

Bart Baxter, a longtime supporter of the Washington Poets Association, placed first in the 1994 MTV Poetry Grand Slam and the 1998 Seattle Grand Slam. In 2001, he was Seattle's first Poet Populist. His books of poetry include A Man, Ostensibly (Egress Studio Press, 2004), The Man with St. Vitus' Dance (Floating Bridge Press, 2000), Sonnets from the Mare Imbrium (Floating Bridge Press, 1999), and others. The Washington Poets Association and Bart Baxter created the contest 9 years ago to recognize and reward performance poets regardless of whether or not they had been published in print.

Washington Poets Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the creation and appreciation of poetry. Besides the annual poetry contests, the group puts on Burning Word, (April 29, 2006) an annual poetry festival that highlights Washington poets, and publishes a judged anthology of member poetry yearly. Membership information can be found at Washington Poets Association.

The 2006 Bart Baxter Contest for Poetry in Performance is co-sponsored by Richard Hugo House.
